GENERAL INFORMATION

The Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum (ILJM) is a nonprofit cultural organization certified by the Greek Ministries of Finance and Culture in 1993. The Museum acts as an international center for decorative arts and crafts, with an emphasis on goldsmithing and contemporary studio jewelry.

The Museum is located under the sacred hill of the Acropolis in two buildings: the original jewelry workshops of its founder Ilias Lalaounis and the Lalaounis’ family home raised in 1927. Its permanent collection includes contemporary jewelry and historic decorative arts. Temporary exhibitions display jewelry and decorative arts from other Museums and private collections. The ILJM includes two Artist in Residence Studios offering visitors a new perspective in a museum visit. The research library, the video rooms, the museum shop, and the coffee shop are accessible daily to offer both children and adults a variety of facilities with tours, lectures, and workshops running daily on related themes.

The curatorial department presents temporary exhibitions and educational programs. Its mission is focused on educational activities for students and people with disabilities. Since 2017, the ILJM introduced two new programs organized for the first time in a European Museum. The Hephaistus Summer School, www.jss.gr, is an accredited program on the history and practice of western jewelry, taking place every June at the Museum premises. The first Jewelry Artist in Residence Program introduces two new live workshops contributing to the promotion of contemporary studio jewelry. Traditional and modern techniques celebrate new Greek artistic creations with the exclusive donation of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.

LIVE ARTIST IN RESIDENCE STUDIOS

The Artists’ Studios, ZEM & ZEDET, are the first interactive jewelry workshops built within a European museum. The studios focus on promoting contemporary studio jewelry through the live work of young artists working in public. Visitors may watch the demonstration of ancient and modern metalsmithing techniques and the use of traditional crafts and experimentation of new materials in a newly motivated jewelry artists’ hub.

The Jewelry Artist in Residence Program and the two live metalsmithing and traditional crafts studio workshops are exclusively funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
