After “the Expedition of the Argonauts”, Karmen Rouggeri and Christina Kouloumpi direct the myth of Theseus and Minotaur at the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation for the 2019-2020 season. Children and adults will follow the route of the well-loved hero of our mythology, in a subtle and detailed performance.
About the play:
The crown Prince of Athens, Theseus, after finding out that he is the son of Aegeus, the king of Athens, takes the sandals and the sword that his father had left for him under a big rock and starts his journey from Troizina to Athens in order to meet him. Despite the advice of his mother to travel by boat, he opted to go on land.
He wanted to follow a more difficult and arduous path, in order to get rid of the criminals and the muggers that overran the area, having as a role model Hercules and his labours.
Our play is divided into two parts.
In the first part, which includes the route of Theseus from Troizina to Athens, it was decided to have an Aristophanic approach on the direction and the stage design, in order to avoid the difficult scenes for the young audience.
The second part comprises of:
1. The journey of Theseus to Crete that will be presented with an impressive scenic design, by creating a sea world on stage.
2. The palace of Minos and the prominent labyrinth, where Theseus will take the clew from Princess Ariadne in order to reach Minotaur and succeed in his greatest labour.
The play will be accompanied by Cretan lyra, mantinades(Cretan lyrical poems), dance and traditional Cretan songs.
